 | Maya y Cantu were the first major recording artists in the accordion-and- bajo-sexto norteño style that continues to dominate the U.S.-Mexico border region, but their work has never before been collected, and they are all but unknown to modern listeners. This album proves that their popularity in the 1940s was no accident. While Cantu's accordion work is fairly basic, the harmony vocals are wonderful, with the pure, soulful power of the great country duets. The material is a nice mix of classic corridos , ranchera love songs, and a sprightly polka. Reminiscent of the more famous Alegres de Terán, Maya y Cantu deserve the attention of any lover of traditional border song. --Elijah Wald (less)Artist: Jesus Maya & Timoteo Cantu | $10 - $75 Compare5 Merchants |

 | Rome in the eighteenth century: this reconstruction of the Marian Vespers - five psalms, a Magnificat and their brief antiphons - is drawn from the works of the maestro di cappella of St Peter's, Virgilio Mazzocchi, and his close colleagues Carissimi and Frescobaldi. Anything but austere, this music is a worthy successor to that of the great Palestrina. (less)Artist: Cantus Colln | $10 - $21 Compare7 Merchants |

 | This CD was recorded during Cantus' 10th anniversary season. The music on this album not only reflects much of Cantus' repertoire during the 2005-06 season, but also the collective spirit, innovation and artistry that a decade of men singing can create. The album is dedicated to all members of Cantus past, present and future and to the idea that there is no endeavor as pure, noble and right as singing.
