 | One of the most popular franchises in anime history, Dragon Ball began in 1984 as a manga by Akira Toriyama in Shonen Jump . Dragon Ball Z (1989), the second TV adaptation, is the most beloved: it ran for 291 episodes--more than Dragon Ball (1986) and Dragon Ball GT (1996) combined. Over the years, the program has introduced countless boys to the world of Japanese animation. The first season re-introduces the main characters and sets up a new threat. Goku learns he's not an Earthling, but a Saiyan from the planet Vegeta. Only three other Saiyans survive, all of them extremely powerful and destructive. Goku destroys Raditz with the help of Piccolo, but dies in the process. He spends much of the season training in the Other World with King Kai. Piccolo takes over training Goku's son Gohan, anticipating he will have to face the remaining Saiyans, Nappa and Vegeta. These episodes set the pattern for the combination of martial arts training, fantasy-battles and slapstick comedy that make the series so popular. The storyline rambles, with lots of digressions, repeats, and false endings--none of which bother the fans. Although Dragon Ball Z has been released previously in the US, Funimation pulled out all the stops for this edition. The entire series has been remastered from the original prints, and the Japanese language track is included for the first time. (Goku and Krillin have higher-pitched, younger voices than they do in the American dub.) For Dragon Ball Z fans, this version clearly supercedes all previous ones. | | Bardock the Father of Goku ( Tatta Hitori no Saishuu Kessen : "Lonely Final Battle," 1990) and The History of Trunks ( Zebbo he no Hankou!! Nokosareta Chou-Senshi Gohan to Torunkusu : "Resist Despair!! The Ultimate Surviving Fighters: Gohan and Trunks," 1993) were the first and second Dragon Ball Z TV specials. The programs present the back stories of later adventures. Bardock was one of the Saiyans Frieza used as mercenaries to conquer other worlds. But Frieza and his lieutenant Doodoria feared the Saiyans might eventually become strong enough to threaten them. Doodoria murdered Bardock's squadron; Frieza destroyed the Saiyan planet. Vegeta, Nappa and Goku (né Kakarot) were the only survivors. Before he was killed, Bardock was cursed with the ability to see the future, including his own brutal death. But that psychic power also enabled Bardock to see that his infant son would grow up to destroy the monstrous Frieza. The History of Trunks is set further in the future: the androids 17 and 18 that Dr. Gero created are ravaging the Earth. As Goku died of a heart ailment several years earlier, no one can defeat them, not even Gohan. Trunks, the son of Vegeta and Bulma, fights 17 and 18, but loses ignominiously. Only one hero can save the world: Trunks launches the time machine Bulma invented to take medicine back to Goku that will save his life and alter the course of history. Bardock the Father of Goku and The History of Trunks will appeal most strongly to viewers already familiar with the Dragon Ball saga. Since leaving Supertramp in 1983 he has had a series of critically acclaimed and successful solo albums and come through a major accident in the late eighties that threatened his entire career. | ![U2 - Elevation Tour 2001 - Live from Boston [Region 2]](http://img.shopbig.com/120/687474703a2f2f6563782e696d616765732d616d617a6f6e2e636f6d2f696d616765732f492f3431687633594e5831574c2e5f534c3136305f2e6a7067.jpg) | After the huge, lavish spectacles of previous tours, U2 decided to tone things down a bit for Elevation , which accompanied their All That You Can't Leave Behind album. Just as the album marked a return to a simpler more stripped-down sound, the live shows returned to smaller venues and a more intimate show, and from start to finish Elevation provides a welcome reminder of what a great band this is. Recorded in Boston, the show features a healthy mix of new and old songs, which were written over the course of two decades but sound as fresh and relevant as ever. From classics like "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Where the Streets Have No Name," and "I Will Follow" right up to instant favorites such as "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation," every track is stunningly executed. If you saw the concerts, this is a worthy and lasting souvenir; if you didn't, watch this and you might be kicking yourself. --Helen Marquis, Amazon.co.uk (less)Artist: Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr., U2 | $10 - $48 Compare14 Merchants |
| | The chance to witness world class musicians and a great band at a vital point in its evolution is the appeal of Weather Report: Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 1976 . Joe Zawinul (keyboards) and Wayne Shorter (saxophones), co-founders of the enterprise that many would call the greatest jazz-fusion group ever, had recently been joined by a player of almost equal stature: Jaco Pastorius, who at age 24 was busy re-defining the fretless electric bass for generations to come. Pastorius had played on some of Black Market , the most recent Weather Report recording, but he'd only been touring with them for three months when they appeared at the Montreux event; though not yet fully integrated, his playing here frequently backs up his self-description as "the greatest bass player in the world," not only on Black Market material like Shorter's "Elegant People" and Zawinul's "Cannon Ball" and title song (two of his most melodic and enduring tunes) but on earlier items like "Badia" and "Scarlet Woman" as well. With Manolo Badrena on percussion and the explosive Alex Acuna on drums, this was the quintet that would go on to release the landmark Heavy Weather album a year later (you can hear Zawinul noodling on the melody that would become "Birdland," their breakout hit, during "Dr. Honoris Causa"). This gig, which clocks in at slightly under 90 minutes, is smoking from start to finish. The band expands on (and, in the case of "Black Market," slightly speeds up) the recorded versions; as always, the balance of composition and improvisation is brilliant, underlining Zawinul's description of Weather Report as a band that "never solos, but always solos." Although one might wish for a better audio mix (the drums and percussion are too loud, and the overall sound is on the shrill side), this is a welcome addition to the catalogue of a wonderful and important band that's woefully underrepresented on DVD. (Note: Fans will also want to check out the DVD of a '78 performance that's included in Forecast: Tomorrow , Weather Report's 2006 boxed CD set.) --Sam Graham (less)Artist: Weather Report | $10 - $17 Compare13 Merchants |
| | His resume reads like a rock fan's wildest dream: frontman and main songwriter for FREE (founded with the late guitarist Paul Kossoff), BAD COMPANY, THE FIRM, SOLO & QUEEN. Paul Rodgers has been electrifying audiences since he hit #1 with his worldwide hit "All Right Now" co-written with Free. After six years with FREE, Rodgers formed BAD COMPANY with Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs. As the main songwriters they wrote all of the platinum records and #1 hits. While moving forward as a solo artist he took a slight detour and formed THE FIRM with LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page. He then continued as a solo artist and received a Grammy Nomination for his "Muddy Water Blues" CD on which he wrote the title track. In 2005 he joined forces with QUEEN and toured worldwide at QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS performing songs from both of their catalogues. He is currently proceeding on two fronts with QUEEN and as a solo artist. In '07, he will play ten exclusive US dates this spring and one summer date in Holland. | | Super Guitar Trio brings together three legends of jazz guitar: Larry Coryell, Al Di Meola & Biréli Lagrène. These three virtuoso musicians have collaborated at various times in their career, but this concert from 1989 comes from the only tour they have done together as a trio. They perform a mixture of tracks from each of their solo repertoire plus special arrangements of some of their favorite tracks by other artists. For jazz musicians, playing at Montreux is always a highlight and the three guitarists are clearly inspired by playing together in the unique Montreux atmosphere.
