| | George Gershwin is one of the giants of American music, unique in that he was both a brilliant writer of popular songs ("Swanee," "I Got Rhythm," "They Can't Take That Away From Me") and of more serious music, including "Rhapsody in Blue," "An American in Paris," and "Porgy and Bess." Now, in The George Gershwin Reader, music lovers are treated to a spectacular celebration of this great American composer. The Reader offers a kaleidoscopic collection of writings by and about Gershwin, including more than eighty pieces of superb variety, color, and depth. There is a who's who of famous commentators: bandleader Paul Whiteman; critics Robert Benchley, Alexander Woollcott, and Brooks Atkinson; fellow musicians Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Alec Wilder (who analyzes the songs "That Certain Feeling" and "A Foggy Day"), Leonard Bernstein, and the formidable modernist composer Arnold Schoenberg (who was Gershwin's tennis partner in Hollywood). Some of the most fascinating and important writings here deal with the critical debate over Gershwin's concert pieces, especially "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris," and there is a complete section devoted to the controversies over "Porgy and Bess," including correspondence between Gershwin and DuBose Hayward, the opera's librettist (a series of excerpts which illuminate the creative process), plus unique interviews with the original Porgy and Bess--Todd Duncan and Anne Brown. Sprinkled throughout the book are excerpts from Gershwin's own letters, which offer unique insight into this fascinating and charming man. Along with a detailed chronology of the composer's life, the editors provide informative introductions to each entry. Here then is a book for anyone interested in American music. Scholars, performers, and Gershwin's legions of fans will find it an irresistible feast. (less)Binding: Hardcover ♦ ISBN-13: 9780195130195 | $3 - $19 Compare4 Merchants |

| | Embraceable You. Someone to Watch Over Me. Alexander's Ragtime Band. My Funny Valentine. White Christmas. Irving Berlin once wrote a song entitled The Song is Ended, But the Melody Lingers On, and surely the title is a perfect epitaph for an incomparable era of American songwriting that endowed us with so many of our most beloved ballads and rousing showstoppers.brbremThe Song is Ended/emis the story of the Golden Age of American popular music, and a celebration of the enduring melodies and colorful life stories of five of this century's most engaging songwriters: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Richard Rodgers, with a fond bow in the direction of Victor Herbert and George M. Cohan. Author William G. Hyland provides an expert analysis of trends in popular songwriting during the first half of this century, escorting readers on a fascinating tour of the sights and sounds of fifty-odd years of American music, from the scratchy victrolas and Old World melodies of New York's teeming Lower East Side, to the hustle and bustle of Tin Pan Alley, to the hot rhythms and smoky clubs of the Jazz Age, to the sound stages of Hollywood and the glittering Broadway triumphs of Showboat, Anything Goes, Porgy and Bess, Pal Joey, and Oklahoma!. Nostalgic lovers of good music will delight in the stories behind some of their favorite songs: Irving Berlin, for example, originally wrote his tender and romantic classic I'll Be Loving You, Always, for a Marx Brothers revue (he wisely cut it), and he first composed God Bless America as an enlisted soldier in 1918, only to put it aside for almost twenty years when the pianist helping him rehearse for an army benefit complained Geez, another patriotic song?brbrFrom Cole Porter's light-hearted and irrepressible You're the Top to Rodgers and Hart's wistful Blue Moon or the unforgettable Summertime from George Gershwin's masterful Porgy and Bess,emThe Song is Ended/e?è (less)Author: William G. | | If puritanism is, as H.L. Mencken once said, the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy, then this glorious, monumental collection by one of England's most popular humorists is a puritan's nightmare. Focusing primarily on the 19th and 20th century, but with material dating back to Columbus, Frank Muir has packed this volume with enough joy and laughter to sink the Mayflower.brThe range of comic material is amazing--from the gentle, charming comedy of manners, to biting satire, to outrageous parody. There are excerpts from the novels of Jane Austen, P.G. Wodehouse and Mark Twain, complete short stories by O. Henry and Frank O'Connor, classic tall tales from Australia (including one by Banjo Patterson, who also wrote Waltzing Matilda), passages from Groucho Marx's correspondence with Warner Brothers, newspaper columns written by Art Buchwald and Myles na Gopaleen (the novelist Flann O'Brien), a selection of Samuel Johnson's comic definitions, plus a sprinkling of egregious puns, witty sayings, and even the clever names of stores (such as the New York restaurant Just for the Halibut and the London beauty parlor Curl Up and Dye). Muir has gathered work from over two hundred writers and from every English-speaking country. Virtually all of your favorites are here: Jonathan Swift, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Laurence Sterne, Anita Loos, Ring Lardner, Alexander Woollcott, Robert Benchley, Dorothy Parker, S.J. Perelman, Damon Runyon, Fran Lebowitz, Joseph Heller, Evelyn Waugh, Garrison Keilor, Erma Bombeck, Tom Wolfe, and countless others. In addition, there are comic pieces from writers you wouldn't expect to find--such as Thomas Hardy or Lawrence Durrell--and many many writers you may not have discovered yet, such as Jerome K. Jerome or Daisy Ashford (who wrote an unintentionally hysterical novel at age nine, which she published in her thirties).brFrank Muir is one of Britain's best-loved humorists, the host of a highly popular television show a?Ð (less)Binding: Paperback ♦ ISBN-13: 9780192829597 | $0 - $2 Compare2 Merchants |

LAURENCE or LAURENCIN DE MEDICIS, was de- scemled from a brother of Cosmo the elder. In 1537, he killed Alexander de Medicis, whom Charles V. had made duke of Florence. He was jealous of Alexander's power, and disguised his jealousy under the pretext of patriotism. He fled first to Venice, and afterwards to Constantinople; but returned to Venice, where he was assassinated by two of Alexander's soldiers in 1547. He loved men of learning, and cultivated literature. BERNARD SEGNI, an Italian statesman, was a native of Florence, and received his education at Padua. He obtained the patronage of Cosmo, duke of Florence, who sent him on several embassies. He translated some of the works of Aristotle into Italian, and wrote a history of Florence, which was printed in 1723. The author died in 1559. LUDOVICO BECCADELLI, was born of a noble family at Bologna in 1502, studied at Padua, and accompanied cardinal Pole in his legation to Spain. He assisted at the council of Trent, and was delegated by the papal court to Venice and Augsburg. In recompence of his services, he was promoted to the archbishopric of Ragusa, but being appointed in 1 563 superintendant of the education of the son of Cosmo I., grand duke of Tuscany, and expecting the archbishopric of Pisa, he renounced that of Ragusa. His expectations, however, were disappointed, and he was obliged to content himself with the provostship of the cathedral of Rieto, in which office he died in 1572. He was reckoned eminent as a man of letters, and wrote in Latin the lives of the cardinals Bembo and Pole, and in Italian a life of Petrarch, esteemed more correct than any other. JOHN MORON E, cardinal, a celebrated negociator, born at Milan in 1509, was the son of Jerome Morone, grand chancellor of the state of Milan, an e... (less) | $30 See ItA1Books |
