| | The ballade was Frank Martin's specialty. The Swiss composer wrote six of them throughout his long career, each featuring a different solo instrument or group of solo instruments. They are all from about 10 to 15 minutes in length, and like Samuel Barber's Essays for Orchestra, they pack a great deal of concentrated, communicative music into a very small space. The work for viola, wind, harp, harpsichord and percussion is a particularly colorful and evocative work, but then all of them are marvelously written and all too rarely encountered in the concert hall for the simple reason that they're too short. These performances are terrific. --David Hurwitz (less)Artist: | $10 - $23 Compare6 Merchants |

| | Director Tod Williams ( The Adventure of Sebastian Cole ) has drastically cut 'n' pasted novelist John Irving's A Year as a Widow into a challenging examination of love, loss and troubled character whose tone lies somewhere between The Ice Storm and In the Bedroom . Williams' troubled interior landscapes inspire Brazilian composer Marcelo Zarvos to an understated, if emotionally compelling gem of a score here, one that treats the film's melodrama with measured respect and a warm, invitingly human sense of scale. The composer's cues lean towards a small string ensemble, seasoning those mature, autumnal arrangements with spare, haunting solo piano passages ("A Sound Like Someone"), gentle harp flourishes ("Orient Point," "Summer Job") and a halting, playful take on the minuet ("Gin Lane," "Eduardo Gets Fired"). The result evokes a cross between Rachel Portman's own delicate scoring sensibilities and the introspective work of Elmer Bernstein on Far From Heaven and its own 50's i... | | Yagi Michiyo is renowned for her boundary-blurring use of the traditional koto, which when played conventionally can sound rich like a harp or folksy like a small, plucked lute. But the 13-string zither hasn't seen anything like Yagi Michiyo's attack, at least not on record. There's Elizabeth Falconer's Isshin Emerging , a collection of 20th-century koto works, and certainly other pioneers on the instrument out there. But Michiyo has an attack that would startle any listener, even when she's playing gently, as on "Remembrance," where the melody is carried by descending phrases, resonance, and bent strings. Her full range of execution becomes more apparent on the title piece, which is a thick rush of strums and picks whose twang can barely gather together with all the furious motion over the strings. If Asian zither or solo string music is your forte, this is something to spin when fresh attack and intensity are most necessary. --Andrew Bartlett (less)Artist: Yagi Michiyo | $12 - $17 Compare6 Merchants |
| | KALIMBA ALA CARTE is Scotty Hayward's collection of solo performances on the African Kalimba. This original instrumental music reflects influences of African traditions, as well as jazz, reggae, calypso, blues, and classical. Five kalimbas in nine different tunings give each song a unique character and style. The performer also provides rhythmic accompaniment with maracas (African "hosho") tied to his foot. All tracks were recorded live, with the kalimba and foot maracas being played simultaneously. Some tracks utilize guitar effects, which were also performed live. The kalimba (also known as mbira, sansa, thumb-harp, thumb-piano) is one of Africa's oldest and most popular melodic instruments. It is a small sound box with metal keys on top, which are plucked with the thumbs. This primary sound can be modified using sound holes and the vibrations from the bottom of the box. These effects, combined with the interplay of musical lines, create the illusion of several instruments... (less)Artist: Scotty Hayward | $16 - $19 Compare2 Merchants |
