 | While comparisons to nerd-rock dandies Weezer are probably inevitable for the fabulously named All-American Rejects, discerning listeners will note that where the cheeky lyrics about painfully awkward love end, the group's rhythmic force picks up, positioning the Oklahoma crew more as a geeky Green Day than the above-named preppy pop dabblers. No shame in that--on their major label debut, the All-American Rejects marry punk and pop with a clear sense of purpose and no particular loyalty to either form, cherry-picking the best of each and arriving at a spiky, effervescent middle ground. Singer Tyson Ritter is especially convincing in his role as hapless lover. But on tracks like the muscular "Too Far Gone" and the vaguely orchestral "The Last Song," Ritter's comrades drive the whole shebang home with instrumental freight. And you'd have to be pretty hard-hearted not to find yourself echoing the sing-singy strains of "Swing Swing" and "My Paper Heart." Fans of ironic pop--Box Car Race... | With three years since their last album, Pussy Whipped , and only a few 7-inch singles in the meantime, Bikini Kill had loads of time to become a band that stands on its own merits. Reject All American , their 1996 sophomore release, reveals a refined punk band with increased clarity, verified competence, and expanded range. While the band's heart still lies in the sneering brat punk of the Sex Pistols or X-Ray Spex--heard here on thrilling two-minute slices of attitude like "Capri Pants" and "Statement of Vindication"--the band also gives a go at airy alt rock (bassist Kathi Wilcox's jangly "False Start"), classic new wave pop (the title track's Go-Go's chorus), and even drops a trumpet and xylophone into the mix. Still, it's Kathleen Hanna's words and vocals that have matured most and remain the band's primary strength. It's enough to make you proud: Just look at how our little grrrl has grown. --Roni Sarig (less)Artist: Bikini Kill | $10 - $17 Compare9 Merchants |

 | Rustic bluegrass music has been the perfect soundtrack to many lazy Oklahoma afternoons. When the timeless sounds of a searing fiddle, rollicking banjo, and charming mandolin combine with honey-sweet harmonies, they expertly transform the fresh songs of the All-American Rejects. The ragged edges of the band's biggest hits are whittled into perfect pieces of rural pop. Wondering what the All-American Rejects would have sounded like if they listened to country rather than rock? This album provides the dirty little secret. | Oklahoma's All-American Rejects finally follow up their self-titled 2002 debut three years later. Happily, Move Along sounds like almost no time at all had passed between outings. Kicking off with the brash punk-pop of the first single, 'Dirty Little Secret' (which features a killer distorted guitar riff), Move Along keeps things lively. The songs are short and the choruses are tailor-made for shouting along with, as people undoubtedly will. As before, co-leader Nick Wheeler decorates the songs with more odd touches than one would expect from an otherwise straightforward pop-punk band, layering sitar, banjo, theremin and hip-hop-flavored electronic beats into songs that otherwise sound little different from the likes of Blink-182 or Good Charlotte. Highlights include the sneering 'Stab My Back', and the flamenco-inflected rocker 'Top of the World'. 2005. (less)Artist: All American Rejects | $14 - $75 Compare6 Merchants |
